Enrico Fermi was born on 29 September 1901 in Rome, the third child of Alberto Fermi, a railroad employee, and Ida de Gattis, a schoolteacher. He learned physics in part from a four-volume 1840 elementary mechanics text he found at a market in the Campo de' Fiori and worked through in its entirety before he was fourteen, teaching himself the mathematical formalism as he went. At seventeen he submitted an entry to the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa — an institution whose competitive exam candidates typically prepared for years — and wrote an entrance essay on Fourier analysis of a vibrating rod. The examiner called him in to discuss it in person. He entered Pisa at seventeen and had completed a doctoral dissertation on X-ray diffraction by the time he was twenty-one.
In 1927 he became the first professor of theoretical physics at the University of Rome, a position created specifically for him by the Italian Ministry of Public Instruction. The Italian physics establishment of the 1920s did not yet have the infrastructure to produce what Fermi was doing, so the Ministry built it around him. He spent the 1930s constructing the experimental and theoretical foundations of nuclear physics, including the 1934 discovery that slow neutrons were more effective than fast ones at inducing radioactive transformations — a result with direct implications for reactor design that were not fully understood for another eight years. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1938 for the discovery of new radioactive elements produced by neutron irradiation. He and his family travelled to Stockholm for the ceremony and did not return to Italy. Mussolini's racial laws of that year had made his wife Laura, who was Jewish, a target. They went to New York instead.

It achieved criticality at 3:25 PM. The chain reaction ran for twenty-eight minutes at a power output of about half a watt — too small to power a lightbulb, large enough to demonstrate the principle. The coded phone call to James Conant — 'The Italian navigator has just landed in the new world. How were the natives? Very friendly' — was Fermi's announcement. The composure was not performance. It was temperament.
He joined the Manhattan Project's Metallurgical Laboratory and later moved to Los Alamos, where he directed the F Division. After the war he became a professor at the University of Chicago and continued working in particle physics until his death from stomach cancer on 28 November 1954, at fifty-three. The element with atomic number 100, synthesised in 1952, is named fermium.
